Consumer Behavior: Product Characteristics and Quality Perception
Consumers rely on signals, both extrinsic and intrinsic attributes, to solve their asymmetric information problem regarding product quality. In this study an experiment is designed to evaluate how consumers assess quality perception in terms of specific product characteristics, namely colors and shapes in product labels. According to the cue consistency theory, the prediction is that multiple sources of information are more useful when they provide corroborating information than when they offer disparate conclusions. In this sense, particular colors and shapes combinations which are consistent are expected to enhance consumers´ product quality perception, while other combinations that are inconsistent will decrease it.Consumer, Behavior, Quality Perception, Label, Color, Shape
Management Quality Measurement: Using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) Estimation Approach for Banks in Brazil
While the quality of a bank's management is generally acknowledged to be a key contributor to a financial institutional failure, it is usually not calculated for lack of an objective measure. This paper presents a new paradigm approach for quantifying a bank's managerial efficiency, using a data envelopment analysis (DEA) model that combines multiple inputs and outputs to compute a scalar measure of efficiency and management quality. The analysis of the largest 50 Brazilian banks over a twelve-year period from 1995 to 2006 shows significant differences in management quality scores between institutions. Hence, this new metric provides an important, but previously missing, modelling element for the early identification of troubled banks and can be used as a tool for off-site bank supervision in Brazil.Data Envelopment Analysis, DEA, Banks, Brazil
MESSAGE ON THE BOTTLE: COLOURS AND SHAPES OF WINE LABELS
Wine consumers rely mainly on the label on the bottle to infer the quality of its content. But there is little empirical research on how colours can be interacted with shapes in the design of wine labels. This study draws from an experiment using data from Spain and shows that there are strong preferences for selected colour-shape combinations in label design. Surprisingly, colour alone does not elicit as strong preferences as certain shapes do, at least when they are assessed irrespectively of the shapes featured in the label. Other combinations, on the other hand, are very resilient, especially those that contain colour hues, such as brown, yellow, black and green, in labels with salient rectangular and hexagonal patterns.wine labels, Marketing,

A web tool to detect and track Solar features from SDO images
Coronal bright points (CBPs) are useful features that can be used to calculate solar rotation even when no active regions are present. Unlike active regions, CBPs are dis-tributed at all latitudes on the solar disk and its lifetime varies from less than an hour to a few days.
Identifying and tracking CBPs are the main keys to successfully calculate the Solar corona rotation profile for different latitudes. Over the last years this topic has been an area of research in solar astronomy and some effective methods have been developed.
The purpose of this dissertation was to design a web tool that retrieves, prepro-cesses, detects and tracks CBPs on solar images and that allows search and visualization of CBPs and solar information from a database, helping astrophysicists on their solar analysis.
The detection uses a gradient based segmentation algorithm that has proved to provide accurate data about CBPs’ dynamics.
It was developed a website to visualize the results, hosted by SPINLab. The track-ing from 480 images confirmed to be consistent within the expected when comparing with other authors’ work.
This topic was motivated by the astrophysicists need for a near to real-time tool that allows the most recent data, as well as archive with historical data, concerning the Solar corona rotation to be processed just a few minutes after the image being captured by Nasa’s Atmospheric Imaging Assembly on board of the Solar Dynamic Observatory
The effects of fatigue and task knowledge duration on kicking performance and pacing strategies in soccer
Interest in the topic of fatigue in sports science has a long history and recent research and theories have highlighted the problem of fatigue more broadly. A new perspective seems to have emerged supported by the concept of the brain acting as a central master regulator of exercise performance. This kind of regulation is named “pacing” and nowadays is assumed as an important concept in sport and exercise, supporting this psychophysiological perspective. Having prior knowledge about the activity is a central point on this view of pacing, based on the principle that athletes are then able to self-regulate their own performance through the entirety of the exercise. However, the precise importance of the psychophysiological perspective in context of training (exercises) or competition remains unclear, especially in team sports as a soccer. The general aim of this thesis was to analyze the effects of fatigue and task knowledge duration on kicking performance and pacing strategies in soccer. For the accomplishment of these purposes the following sequence was used: (i) reviewing the available literature; (ii) demonstrating the effects of fatigue on kicking ball velocity in soccer players; (iii) investigating the influence of fatigue upon kicking performance of soccer players and examining the effect of the knowledge of the exercise duration upon these two parameters; (iv) investigating the influence of different exercise intensities on kicking accuracy and velocity in soccer players and analyzing the player pacing strategies from different prescribed intensities; (v) investigating the possible influence of knowledge of exercise duration on player pacing strategies during soccer small-sided games (5 vs 5). The main conclusions drawn were (i) there is potential negative fatigue effect induced by high intensity exercises on kicked-ball velocities in soccer; (ii) the effect of fatigue can be variable; (iii) kicking accuracy is not affected by fatigue considering the accuracy as a secondary aim in relation with kicking velocity; (iv) no effects of knowledge of the exercise duration were found on kicking performance, but in respect of pacing strategies during soccer small-sided games, the findings showed its relevance. In addition, the results support the hypothesis about the involvement of psychophysiological factors and they express the complexity of the fatigue phenomenon and the relevance of the theory of central master regulation of the brain on exercise performance
The pollinator community of the Madeiran endemic Echium candicans: individual-based network metrics, relation with plant traits, and pollinator behaviour
Tese de mestrado, Biologia da Conservação, Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de CiĂŞncias, 2019The study of plant-pollinator interactions is particularly important in insular environments, not only because these are rich in unique plant species, but also due to the threats that affect these communities and their interactions. The Macaronesia is a biogeographic region well known for its rich diversity of endemic plants that radiated in these archipelagos. A good example is the genus Echium, which has a total of 29 species. Despite their diversity, studies focused on the pollinator communities of these plants are restricted to some species in the Canary Islands and mostly isolated records on the other archipelagos. The focus of this work was the community of diurnal pollinators that visit the Madeiran endemic Echium candicans. We intended to assess the relations between individual plant traits and the community of pollinators, following an individual-based design. We also aimed to characterize the behaviour of some of the most commonly observed pollinator species. Overall we sampled 24 individuals distributed between two sites (one at 1500m and the other at 1800m), near Pico do Arieiro (Madeira). For each plant, we determined its largest diameter and height, the average size of its inflorescences, estimated the number of flowers as well as plant isolation. The pollinator community of each plant was sampled during observation sessions. We also used pan-traps and net trapping during timed-transects to sample the local community of potential pollinators. We recorded the time, the number of inflorescences and the number of flowers visited for a maximum of twenty different pollinators of each selected species. As expected, we observed a diverse community of pollinators visiting E. candicans, with 50 different insect and one lizard species observed. The bumblebee Bombus ruderatus was the most common species at both sites, while the endemic butterfly Hipparchia maderensis and the bee Amegilla quadrifasciata were the second most common at each site. The honeybee Apis mellifera and H. maderensis were more common at the site at a lower altitude, while A. quadrifasciata, Scaeva pyrastri and the Madeiran lizard (Teira dugesii) were more common higher altitude. The diversity of bees sampled on E. candicans was similar to the one seen in Canary Echium, but the Madeiran species was visited by a much higher diversity of hoverflies and butterflies. The plant traits were related to the network metrics by obtaining standardized regression coefficients. The number of flowers per plant and the average size of the inflorescences were the traits that presented a positive relation with most network metrics. Nested rank showed that the average size of the inflorescences was related to an increase in plant generalization. The other metrics showed that plants with more flowers and larger inflorescences were more central in the network, had a higher number of pollinators and seemed to be more important for their pollinators. Most species and groups of pollinators also showed a positive relation with the previously mentioned plant traits. Only three species (A. quadrifasciata, Eristalis tenax and T. dugesii) showed a negative relation with isolation, which might be due to the short distances involved. Two of them seemed to prefer denser patches of resources, having also the strongest relations with flower number. Large bees had the highest visitation rates. Only the two studied hoverflies had a similar value to that of B. terrestris. Butterflies, the small bee Lasioglossum wollastoni and the Madeiran lizard had much lower visitation rates. However, butterflies spent more time on the visited flowers, possibly being equally important pollinators. Larger bees are probably responsible for the highest amount of pollination while species like H. maderensis might be more effective pollinators. This study showed that E. candicans is visited by a great diversity of pollinators, which included a reptile. The amount and diversity of pollinators seemed to be mostly related to the amount of available floral resources at each plant. Overall, the different pollinators might complement each other due to their different foraging behaviours.
